The timeless little black dress...onlygowns

The theme was elegance and style, reminiscent of the days of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
With a “Le Maison Noir” theme harking back to the days of Parisian salon shows of the 1950s, final-year fashion students recently put on display a range of beautifully-styled black day dresses created for the 2002 summer season.
The occasion was set off by the venue - the entrance foyer of the refurbished Main Building - and by the music - big band bossa novas of the era. The audience was suitably impressed, media reaction was positive.
The Le Maison Noir collection was developed for presentation to Zambesi label founder Liz Findlay, who afterwards described both the dresses and the venue as inspirational.
“As we’ve seen, the little black dress remains open to exploration, and I’m impressed by what the students have done with it, covering everything from the demure to the sexy,” she said.
“And I’m sure you couldn’t help but have some sort of emotional component to your learning in a place like this - the open spaces are incredible. I would one day like to have the Great Hall for my own show.”
Lucire editor Jack Yan said the students had taken what was a difficult medium and made it their own.
“It all came out well. The dresses, the music, the venue - black is one of the hardest colours to work with, and certainly one of the hardest colours to shoot,” he said after the show.
“So when you’re putting fashion such as this on a web-site, it must have distinguishing features, and I’m impressed by the detail in many of these dresses. This works well in our medium.”
